The UC Master Food Preservers understand the joy of canning the harvest to enjoy fruits and vegetables throughout the year. We relish the thrill of entering samples of our canned goods in the county fair. How does our apricot jam compare to others? Are our pickles picture perfect? Do the judges agree that our tomatillo salsa is the best they’ve tasted? You can see why we were heartbroken that our local county fairs were cancelled this year. We’ve seen competitors who have a long history of entering in the county fair for many years and this year a virus took that opportunity away.
But wait – there’s good news! On Thursday, September 3, the UC Master Food Preservers of Amador and Calaveras Counties will host a preserved food competition open to residents of Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties. The event is a little different than the county fair to comply with safety standards, but you have the opportunity to enter the competition.
· One jar per entry
· Online entry forms due Sunday, August 23, 2020
· Drive through delivery of entries in two counties on Saturday, August 29, 2020 starting at 8:00 am: Howard Park in Ione and the UC Master Gardener Demonstration Garden in San Andreas.
· Entry fee is $1.50 per jar to cover cost of ribbons and postage. Jars will not be returned.
· Closed judging is on Thursday, September 3, 2020.
The gardens are producing, the farmers markets are stocked, neighbors are sharing, and the stores have plenty of produce. In addition to entering items already in your pantry, you have plenty of time to can up a favorite and enter it. Who knows, you may have the Best of Division or Best of Show product in your pantry!
