August is 'Get Ready for Kindergarten' Month!
Since First 5 Amador was unable to hold our annual Summer Kindergarten Bridge Program, we provided Kindergarten Readiness Kits for local incoming kindergartners during the month of July. These kits included a wealth of information and materials to help parents get their children ready for kindergarten. We work closely with the local kindergarten teachers, and the feedback that we hear most often from these teachers, is that many children start kindergarten without knowing how to use scissors. Teaching children how to cut with scissors is one of the hardest skills to teach, so helping your child get a jump-start at home, will give them a tremendous advantage when they begin school. We have compiled some helpful information for you here, which
was also included in July's kits...

Finding Balance with Distance Learning and Time Outdoors

With distance learning about to begin for school, this will also mean increased screen time for your children. To help balance out the amount of time spent in front of a computer screen, be sure to allow your children plenty of time to spend outdoors. Try using this handy chart to stay on track with this balance. Before school starts, you could attempt to cut out all screen time for a week, or at least match screen time with fresh air time...

Provider Spotlight

Meet Amanda Radel ~ participant of 'Amador Quality for Kids'...

In the summer of 2018, my partner and I uprooted from the bay area in search of a tranquil, less populated place, where we could raise our daughter; with no plan and completely by chance, we ended up in the quaint town of Pine Grove. I have a B.A. degree in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley and my focus was in Evolution and Ecology. While I discovered that I was passionate about the field of biology during my undergraduate studies, I was undecided about my ultimate career path. I have had a passion for learning for as long as I can remember, and as a child I wanted to be a teacher; this dream took a backseat and did not resurface until 2018. In August 2018, I decided to dip my toes into teaching by working as a substitute teacher. During this time, my mom proposed the idea of opening up a daycare, which was never something that I would have considered on my own. However, with the excitement of me considering a career in teaching and learning of a need for childcare in my area, this was the seed that started me on the path to creating The Cat and The Fiddle. As a childcare provider and as a mother, 'Amador Quality for Kids' supported me and my business in a myriad of ways. They supplied educational toys for my program, they offer a wide variety of professional development opportunities, scholarships and compensation initiatives so that I could purchase educational materials, provided tools and resources to help me to monitor the development of children, and they are always available to offer resources for everything imaginable that relates to promoting the healthy functioning of families and healthy development of children. Quality for Kids has provided me access to valuable resources and educational materials that kept my program and the families that I cared for thriving.

Since preparing to open The Cat and The Fiddle in 2018, I have immersed myself in the field of Early Childhood Education, taking courses through Los Rios Community College and taking courses and workshops offered through Quality for Kids. I now hold an Associate Preschool Teacher permit, and I am working towards receiving my Teacher permit by the end of 2020. The experiences that I have had over the last year, and the relationships that I have forged with children and their families, have been incredibly gratifying and have taught me a great deal about myself. I am not only excited about teaching children and making a positive influence in their lives, but I am also excited about what is in store for me to learn on this journey as well.

How Can You Give Kids The Best
Start In Life?

... by taking your children to well-child and dental check ups and also,
by doing an "ASQ."
The Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) is a way to make sure your child is "on track." The screening tools are designed to be completed by parents or primary caregivers, that encourage parent-caregiver involvement. These questionnaires are available to parents of children aged 0-5, and to child care providers.
Each questionnaire can be completed in 10-20 minutes, and is divided into five areas: Communication, Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Problem Solving, and Personal-Social. The benefit for all children and families is so that parents/caregivers know which areas they can focus on at home with their children. For more information or to request an ASQ, please call First 5 Amador at 257-1092.

We can connect child care providers with a home visitor who can visit you virtually at your child care facility, train you in the use of the ASQ's, and help guide you in how to use them in your programs!
