Local Mitigation Measures
Post Date: 02/27/2020 1:08 PM

Amador County Public Health is working closely with our regional, state and federal public health partners to closely monitor and respond to the outbreak of novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), a new respiratory virus. There are currently no cases of COVID-19 in Amador County. Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Public Health is also working with local health care providers to ensure readiness to respond to this novel virus.

Tips to Protect Yourself and Others:
At this time, there are no special precautions beyond the usual recommended measures to prevent infections.
Community members should do the following to prevent the spread of respiratory illness:
Wash your hands with soap and water, rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when your cough.
Stay home if you are sick.
Seasonal flu activity remains high in California. Amador Public Health also recommends getting a flu shot to protect from the flu.

“If this virus does come to Amador County we have plans in place that we will activate,” comments Dr. Rita Kerr, Amador County Health Officer. “First to focus on are prevention measures like avoiding close contact with people who are sick and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Amador Public Health also has existing isolation and quarantine protocols and pandemic influenza plans that would be easily applied to a coronavirus outbreak.”

This is a rapidly evolving situation and preparing for events such as COVID-19 is part of the everyday work of public health professionals. One of the most important ways we combat the spread of illness like a coronavirus is through education and information from reliable sources. Amador County Public Health will continue to closely monitor this emerging novel virus.
